Leather Tunic in villager trading
Leather Tunic is something you buy from villagers rather than sell to them; it does not appear as a raw-material trade, so trading is one of the few survival-friendly ways to stock up on it.
Leather Tunic is the weakest armour tier but the easiest to obtain. A Leatherworker dyes it to match the village's biome, so the colour you receive depends on where the villager lives. A crafting grid makes one from 8 × leather. It also sits in 5 of the game's chest loot tables.

All 2 trades on this item were read out of the trade files Minecraft Java 26.2 ships in its own data, checked on against the item, both amounts and the use limit. Bedrock 1.26.30.5 is read as well, and where it disagrees the row says how. Which files, and what is not checked.
Your odds of finding Leather Tunic
A villager only shows part of its trade table, so knowing who trades leather tunic is not the same as getting it. The friendliest roll here is the leatherworker (novice): 67% of them carry it, so it takes about 1.5 of them on average before one does.
| Villager | Tier | Villagers with this offer | Rolls to see it | Most from one villager | After a cure |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Leatherworker | Novice | 67% (2 in 3)Bedrock 50% (1 in 2) | about 1.5 | 24 leather tunic a day2 restocks a day | 1 emeraldwas 7, 6 off |
| Leatherworker | Journeyman | 100% (2 in 2)same in Bedrock | none, it is always there | 24 leather tunic a day2 restocks a day | 1 emeraldwas 7, 6 off |
The chance is the draw size over the pool size in the game's own trade set file for that tier. The Bedrock line under it is the same sum on Bedrock's own table, which splits a tier into groups and draws out of each one separately, so the two editions often disagree. The day figure is the trade's use limit times the 2 restocks a villager is allowed per in-game day (Villager.allowedToRestock), so it is a ceiling and not an average: it assumes you are there for every restock. The cure column is 125 reputation times the trade's own multiplier, floored, and never takes a cost below one. Counted from the game's own draw sizes. How that check works.
Buying a leather tunic against making it
The game's recipe makes one, made from 8 leather. Villagers here buy every one of those, so the parts have a price of their own: leather at 6 an emerald. That puts one at 1.33 emeralds of goods.
A Leatherworker sells a leather tunic at Novice for 7 emeralds. That is 5.3 times what the parts are worth, so gathering the materials and making it yourself is the cheaper side of the same trade.
Recipe out of data/minecraft/recipe in the same client jar the trades are read from. Part prices are the best rate any villager on this site pays, before any cure discount, and each of those is a trade with a page of its own. How that check works.
Who trades Leather Tunic, and at what price
To buy Leather Tunic, visit a Leatherworker at the Novice tier (7 emeralds) and a Leatherworker at the Journeyman tier (7 emeralds).
Is trading Leather Tunic worth it?
Leather Tunic sells for as little as 7 emeralds, from the Leatherworker at the Novice tier, and nothing else on that list costs more. The price is fixed rather than rolled, so a second Leatherworker will quote you exactly the same.

What 7 emeralds cost in goods
The Leatherworker at its novice tier asks 7 emeralds for a leather tunic. 8 of the 72 villagers that pay emeralds, emptied out:
| A full slot of | To | Emeralds | Buys |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12 compasses | journeyman Cartographer | 12 | 1.7 leather tunics |
| 48 iron ingots | apprentice Toolsmith | 12 | 1.7 leather tunics |
| 64 raw rabbit | novice Butcher | 16 | 2.3 leather tunics |
| 96 tripwire hooks | master Fletcher | 12 | 1.7 leather tunics |
| 224 string | journeyman Fletcher | 16 | 2.3 leather tunics |
| 288 black wool | novice Shepherd | 16 | 2.3 leather tunics |
| 320 stone | apprentice Mason | 16 | 2.3 leather tunics |
| 312 flint | apprentice Leatherworker | 12 | 1.7 leather tunics |
7 compasses against 182 flint for the same 7 emeralds, 26 times the carrying, and the shortest wait is the Butcher at 4.4 real minutes of shelf, gathering not counted.
How Leather Tunic trading works
Every leather tunic offer here locks after 12 uses, and a villager restocks up to twice per Minecraft day, so one is good for 24 of these trades a day and no more.
The earliest leather tunic shows up is the Leatherworker's Novice tier, which a villager has the moment it claims the workstation.
How long Leather Tunic takes in real time
12 leather tunics empty one slot at the Leatherworker, 2400 ticks (Villager.allowedToRestock) at 20 a second (TickRateManager) refill it 2 real minutes later, and the 24000-tick villager day (Timelines) holds 2 of those fills in 20 real minutes.
So one leatherworker moves 24 leather tunics against 168 emeralds a Minecraft day, a leather tunic every 50 real seconds, 8.4 emeralds a real minute. 64 leather tunics take 6 fills across 3 Minecraft days, 6 minutes of it watching the leatherworker walk back to its cauldron.
Tips for trading Leather Tunic
- Clearing the shelf: one Leatherworker sells 12 leather tunics before it has to restock, 84 emeralds for the full slot.
- Where the emeralds come from: the same Leatherworker pays an emerald per 6 leather.
- Cure before a big buy: 84 emeralds for one full slot is enough that curing a zombie leatherworker first, which cuts its prices permanently, pays for the golden apple many times over. How curing works.
- Also on the Leatherworker's list: flint, leather cap, leather boots, rabbit hide, leather horse armor, scute.
