Bookshelf in villager trading

Bookshelf is something you buy from villagers rather than sell to them; it does not appear as a raw-material trade, so trading is one of the few survival-friendly ways to stock up on it.

Bookshelf is paper-based stock that feeds into the Librarian and Cartographer economies. A crafting grid makes one from 6 × planks and 3 × book. Breaking a placed one back out needs Silk Touch.

Your odds of finding Bookshelf

A villager only shows part of its trade table, so knowing who trades bookshelf is not the same as getting it. The friendliest roll here is the librarian (novice): 67% of them carry it, so it takes about 1.5 of them on average before one does.

The chance is the draw size over the pool size in the game's own trade set file for that tier. The Bedrock line under it is the same sum on Bedrock's own table, which splits a tier into groups and draws out of each one separately, so the two editions often disagree. The day figure is the trade's use limit times the 2 restocks a villager is allowed per in-game day (Villager.allowedToRestock), so it is a ceiling and not an average: it assumes you are there for every restock. The cure column is 125 reputation times the trade's own multiplier, floored, and never takes a cost below one. Counted from the game's own draw sizes. How that check works.

Who trades Bookshelf, and at what price

To buy Bookshelf, visit a Librarian at the Novice tier (9 emeralds).

Is trading Bookshelf worth it?

Bookshelf sells for as little as 9 emeralds, from the Librarian at the Novice tier, and nothing else on that list costs more. The price is fixed rather than rolled, so a second Librarian will quote you exactly the same.

What 9 emeralds cost in goods

The Librarian at its novice tier asks 9 emeralds for a bookshelf. 8 of the 72 villagers that pay emeralds, emptied out:

9 diamonds against 288 rotten flesh for the same 9 emeralds, 32 times the carrying, and the shortest wait is the Fletcher at 5.6 real minutes of shelf, gathering not counted.

How Bookshelf trading works

Every bookshelf offer here locks after 12 uses, and a villager restocks up to twice per Minecraft day, so one is good for 24 of these trades a day and no more.

The earliest bookshelf shows up is the Librarian's Novice tier, which a villager has the moment it claims the workstation.

How long Bookshelf takes in real time

12 bookshelves empty one slot at the Librarian, 2400 ticks (Villager.allowedToRestock) at 20 a second (TickRateManager) refill it 2 real minutes later, and the 24000-tick villager day (Timelines) holds 2 of those fills in 20 real minutes.

So one librarian moves 24 bookshelves against 216 emeralds a Minecraft day, a bookshelf every 50 real seconds, 10.8 emeralds a real minute. 64 bookshelves take 6 fills across 3 Minecraft days, 6 minutes of it watching the librarian walk back to its lectern.

Tips for trading Bookshelf

  • Clearing the shelf: one Librarian sells 12 bookshelves before it has to restock, 108 emeralds for the full slot.
  • Where the emeralds come from: the same Librarian pays an emerald per 24 paper.
  • Cure before a big buy: 108 emeralds for one full slot is enough that curing a zombie librarian first, which cuts its prices permanently, pays for the golden apple many times over. How curing works.
  • Also on the Librarian's list: enchanted book, book, lantern, ink sac, glass, book and quill.

Bookshelf trading FAQ

How much does Bookshelf cost from a villager?
9 emeralds from the Librarian at the Novice tier. That price is fixed, so every Librarian offering it asks the same.
Can you sell Bookshelf to a villager for emeralds?
No. Bookshelf only appears on the selling side of the trade window: villagers hand it over for emeralds, none of them take it back.
