YELLOW CANDLE

Yellow reads warmer than most of the other candle colours, closer to firelight than to dye, which is why it turns up so often next to sandstone or oak. The Librarian sells one for 3 emeralds once he has reached master, lit or unlit, same as any other candle once placed.

A crafting grid makes the same item from a plain candle and yellow dye, so buying it only saves the trip, not the ingredients themselves. It never shows up as something a villager buys from you, only something he sells.

One seller, one price: the Librarian at master asks 3 emeralds for 1 candle. That number is set in the trade file directly rather than rolled from a range, so a second Librarian at the same tier charges exactly the same.

Nothing buys a yellow candle back off you, and the offer itself locks after 12 uses before the villager has to return to his lectern and restock.

Yellow Candle sells for as little as 3 emeralds, from the Librarian at the Master tier, and 3 of the other 6 cost less. The price is fixed rather than rolled, so a second Librarian will quote you exactly the same.

Every yellow candle offer locks after 12 uses, and with two restocks allowed per Minecraft day, one Librarian is good for 24 of these trades a day and no more.

It sits at master, level 5 of five, which a villager reaches at 250 trade experience, the last tier a Librarian climbs to. A freshly employed one is nowhere near offering it yet.

Every earlier trade he completes pays experience toward that same climb.

12 candles empty one slot, done in as many clicks. The restock is what costs real time: the game holds the offer for 2 real minutes before the villager can refill it, and a Minecraft day of 20 real minutes only fits two of those windows.

One Librarian caps out at 24 yellow candles for 72 emeralds across a 20-minute day, then goes quiet until the next one begins.

Clearing the shelf costs 36 emeralds: 12 candles at 3 emeralds each before the Librarian needs to restock.

Where the emeralds come from: the same Librarian pays an emerald per 2 book and quills, stock enough of those ahead of time and the candle run pays for itself.

Every candle in the game is the same block underneath: string over honeycomb, then a dye pressed onto the finished candle. Yellow comes from a dandelion or a sunflower, both of which grow in the same open fields the trader tends to appear in, so the colour is one of the easier ones to make yourself if the trade does not show up.

Placed candles give a soft light and up to four fit in one block, which is enough to light a corner without the glare of a torch or the cost of a lantern. They also sit on cake, where a lit candle is the only way the game marks a cake as a birthday cake.

Candles stack up to four in a single block space, and each one added makes the group brighter, so the same block can be a nightlight or a proper lamp depending on how many you place. They can be waterlogged and keep burning under water, which no torch will do.

The one recipe that uses a candle rather than places it is the cake. A candle on a cake is the only way to light one, and the candle comes back when the first slice is eaten.

Lighting them takes flint and steel, and hitting one with a projectile puts it out again, which makes a row of candles the simplest switchable light in the game without a scrap of redstone.
