Item Frame in villager trading

Item Frame is something you buy from villagers rather than sell to them; it does not appear as a raw-material trade, so trading is one of the few survival-friendly ways to stock up on it.

Item Frame is decoration rather than equipment: it changes how a build looks and nothing else. A crafting grid makes one from 8 × stick and 1 × leather.

The 1 trade on this item was read out of the trade files Minecraft Java 26.2 ships in its own data, checked on against the item, both amounts and the use limit. Bedrock 1.26.30.5 is read as well, and where it disagrees the row says how. Which files, and what is not checked.

Your odds of finding Item Frame

A villager only shows part of its trade table, so knowing who trades item frame is not the same as getting it. The friendliest roll here is the cartographer (expert): 13% of them carry it, so it takes about 8 of them on average before one does.

The chance is the draw size over the pool size in the game's own trade set file for that tier. The Bedrock line under it is the same sum on Bedrock's own table, which splits a tier into groups and draws out of each one separately, so the two editions often disagree. The day figure is the trade's use limit times the 2 restocks a villager is allowed per in-game day (Villager.allowedToRestock), so it is a ceiling and not an average: it assumes you are there for every restock. The cure column is 125 reputation times the trade's own multiplier, floored, and never takes a cost below one. Counted from the game's own draw sizes. How that check works.

Buying an item frame against making it

The game's recipe makes one, made from 8 sticks and 1 leather. Villagers here buy every one of those, so the parts have a price of their own: stick at 32 an emerald and leather at 6 an emerald. That puts one at 0.42 emeralds of goods.

A Cartographer sells an item frame at Expert for 7 emeralds. That is 17 times what the parts are worth, so gathering the materials and making it yourself is the cheaper side of the same trade.

Recipe out of data/minecraft/recipe in the same client jar the trades are read from. Part prices are the best rate any villager on this site pays, before any cure discount, and each of those is a trade with a page of its own. How that check works. The grid itself is on the item frame recipe page.

Who trades Item Frame, and at what price

To buy Item Frame, visit a Cartographer at the Expert tier (7 emeralds).

Is trading Item Frame worth it?

Item Frame sells for as little as 7 emeralds, from the Cartographer at the Expert tier, and 2 of the other 3 cost less. The price is fixed rather than rolled, so a second Cartographer will quote you exactly the same.

What 7 emeralds cost in goods

The Cartographer at its expert tier asks 7 emeralds for an item frame. 8 of the 72 villagers that pay emeralds, emptied out:

How Item Frame trading works

Every item frame offer here locks after 12 uses, and a villager restocks up to twice per Minecraft day, so one is good for 24 of these trades a day and no more.

The earliest item frame shows up is the Cartographer's Expert tier, level 4 of five, which a villager reaches at 150 trade experience. A freshly employed one is 3 tiers short of offering item frame at all.

How long Item Frame takes in real time

12 item frames empty one slot at the Cartographer, 2400 ticks (Villager.allowedToRestock) at 20 a second (TickRateManager) refill it 2 real minutes later, and the 24000-tick villager day (Timelines) holds 2 of those fills in 20 real minutes.

So one cartographer moves 24 item frames against 168 emeralds a Minecraft day, an item frame every 50 real seconds, 8.4 emeralds a real minute. 64 item frames take 6 fills across 3 Minecraft days, 6 minutes of it watching the cartographer walk back to its cartography table.

Tips for trading Item Frame

  • Clearing the shelf: one Cartographer sells 12 item frames before it has to restock, 84 emeralds for the full slot.
  • Where the emeralds come from: the same Cartographer pays an emerald for a single compass.
  • Cure before a big buy: 84 emeralds for one full slot is enough that curing a zombie cartographer first, which cuts its prices permanently, pays for the golden apple many times over. How curing works.
  • Also on the Cartographer's list: banner, banner pattern (globe), woodland explorer map, paper, empty map, glass pane.

Item Frame trading FAQ

How much does Item Frame cost from a villager?
7 emeralds from the Cartographer at the Expert tier. That price is fixed, so every Cartographer offering it asks the same.
Can you sell Item Frame to a villager for emeralds?
No. Item Frame only appears on the selling side of the trade window: villagers hand it over for emeralds, none of them take it back.
