Beetroot in villager trading

Beetroot is the crop that rewards building a proper farm instead of hand-tilling a few rows. It grows on the same four-stage clock as wheat and carrots, but observer-fed harvesters strip a whole field the instant the last stage flips, dropping the entire crop into a hopper before you have finished walking to the next block. Nothing about beetroot resists automation, which is exactly why a farmer buying it in bulk turns into a standing emerald income rather than an occasional errand.

It is not just fodder for the trade either. One beetroot on a crafting grid becomes 1 red dye, and a bowl of beetroot soup feeds you without a bottle to return, unlike mushroom stew. Anyone farming it at scale is really farming three things at once: dye stock, soup ingredients, and a crop the Farmer will always take off your hands.

Your odds of finding Beetroot

This is the tier every Farmer opens with, so there is no promotion to wait through, only the luck of the draw. 40% of novice farmers show beetroot among their opening offers, meaning roughly 2.5 claimed composters checked on average before one is buying it. Since the tier is the very first, a villager this young has nothing else worth comparing it against yet.

The chance is the draw size over the pool size in the game's own trade set file for that tier. The Bedrock line under it is the same sum on Bedrock's own table, which splits a tier into groups and draws out of each one separately, so the two editions often disagree. The day figure is the trade's use limit times the 2 restocks a villager is allowed per in-game day (Villager.allowedToRestock), so it is a ceiling and not an average: it assumes you are there for every restock. The cure column is 125 reputation times the trade's own multiplier, floored, and never takes a cost below one. Counted from the game's own draw sizes. How that check works.

Who trades Beetroot, and at what price

Bring it to a Farmer at Novice and he pays 1 emerald for every 15 you hand across, a rate fixed in the trade file so a second farmer at the same tier never haggles.

Is trading Beetroot worth it?

The best rate any villager offers is an emerald per 15 beetroot, from the Farmer, and 2 of the other 5 pay out faster. No villager sells beetroot back, so it is emeralds out and nothing in.

Beetroot against the other 71 ways to earn an emerald

One slot at the Farmer takes 15 beetroot a trade, 16 trades, 16 emeralds. 8 of the 72 villagers that pay emeralds, emptied out:

16 acacia boats against 416 flint for the same 16 emeralds, 26 times the carrying, and the shortest wait is the Fisherman at 10 real minutes of shelf, gathering not counted. Beetroot itself pays 15 an emerald, so 44 of the 72 ask less and 22 ask more.

How Beetroot trading works

This row sits at Novice, the tier a villager claims the instant it settles at an unclaimed composter, no experience banked and no prior sale required. That makes beetroot one of the first things any new farmer might be willing to buy from you, right alongside the other opening-tier crops.

The slot runs 16 sales before it locks, and a restock refills the identical offer rather than swapping in something new. Feeding it faster than the villager can pay simply means the excess sits in your inventory until the next restock opens the door again.

How long Beetroot takes in real time

One farmer clears 16 sales before the slot needs 2 real minutes to refill, and the villager day itself runs 20 real minutes, long enough to fit two of those refills back to back.

Standing there for the whole day turns 480 beetroot into 32 emeralds, a number an observer-fed farm can supply without you lifting a hoe once the contraption is running.

Tips for trading Beetroot

Emptying the slot in one visit costs nothing extra: 240 beetroot hands back 16 emeralds whether you deliver it in one trip or ten, so a hopper minecart routed straight to a trading post beats manual carrying every time.

Where the emeralds go back: the same Farmer sells bread for 0.16666666666666666 emeralds at 6 at a time, its cheapest listing.

Also on the Farmer's list: pumpkin, pumpkin pie, apple, melon, cookie and cake.

Poor food, useful dye

As something to eat, beetroot is close to the bottom of the list: it fills less than bread and takes just as long to grow. As a dye it is the direct route to red, one beetroot for one dye, with no flower hunt and no biome requirement.

The soup is the other use, and it is a trap unless you plan for it. Six beetroots and a bowl make one bowl of soup that does not stack, so a farm big enough to feed a trip is a farm that fills your inventory with single bowls.

Where the crop earns its space is that it replants itself from its own seeds and grows in the same light as everything else, so a beetroot row is a red dye supply that needs no attention once it is in.

Keeping a Farmer supplied with Beetroot

Beetroot goes to the Farmer in lots of 15, and 240 Beetroot empties his offer until the next restock. Every ripe plant drops Beetroot Seeds as well as the root, so a Beetroot patch replants itself from its own harvest: How to Build a Beetroot Farm in Minecraft.
