Diamond in villager trading

Diamond is a raw-material trade: villagers pay emeralds for it, which makes it a candidate for an automated emerald farm rather than something you purchase back.

Diamond is top-tier diamond equipment; villager trading is a steady way to acquire it without mining the diamonds yourself, and the version sold here comes already enchanted. No recipe in Java 26.2 produces it, unless you count unpacking a block of diamond: it comes out of deepslate diamond ore and diamond ore.

All 3 trades on this item were read out of the trade files Minecraft Java 26.2 ships in its own data, checked on against the item, both amounts and the use limit. Bedrock 1.26.30.5 is read as well, and where it disagrees the row says how. Which files, and what is not checked.

Your odds of finding Diamond

A villager only shows part of its trade table, so knowing who trades diamond is not the same as getting it. The friendliest roll here is the toolsmith (expert): 67% of them carry it, so it takes about 1.5 of them on average before one does.

The chance is the draw size over the pool size in the game's own trade set file for that tier. The Bedrock line under it is the same sum on Bedrock's own table, which splits a tier into groups and draws out of each one separately, so the two editions often disagree. The day figure is the trade's use limit times the 2 restocks a villager is allowed per in-game day (Villager.allowedToRestock), so it is a ceiling and not an average: it assumes you are there for every restock. Counted from the game's own draw sizes. How that check works.

Who trades Diamond, and at what price

To sell Diamond for emeralds, bring it to an Armorer at the Journeyman tier (1 unit per 1 emerald), a Toolsmith at the Expert tier (1 unit per 1 emerald), and a Weaponsmith at the Expert tier (1 unit per 1 emerald).

Is trading Diamond worth it?

The best rate any villager offers is an emerald for a single diamond, from the Armorer, and nothing else on the list pays out faster. No villager sells diamond back, so it is emeralds out and nothing in.

Diamond against the other 69 ways to earn an emerald

One slot at the Armorer takes 1 diamond a trade, 12 trades, 12 emeralds. 8 of the 72 villagers that pay emeralds, emptied out:

12 acacia boats against 288 flint for the same 12 emeralds, 24 times the carrying, and the shortest wait is the Butcher at 7.5 real minutes of shelf, gathering not counted. Diamond itself pays 1 an emerald, so nothing in that table asks less and 62 ask more.

How Diamond trading works

Every diamond offer here locks after 12 uses, and a villager restocks up to twice per Minecraft day, so one is good for 24 of these trades a day and no more.

The earliest diamond shows up is the Armorer's Journeyman tier, level 3 of five, which a villager reaches at 70 trade experience. A freshly employed one is 2 tiers short of offering diamond at all.

How long Diamond takes in real time

12 diamonds empty one slot at the Armorer, 2400 ticks (Villager.allowedToRestock) at 20 a second (TickRateManager) refill it 2 real minutes later, and the 24000-tick villager day (Timelines) holds 2 of those fills in 20 real minutes.

So one armorer moves 24 diamonds against 24 emeralds a Minecraft day, a diamond every 50 real seconds, 1.2 emeralds a real minute. 64 diamonds take 6 fills across 3 Minecraft days, 6 minutes of it watching the armorer walk back to its blast furnace.

Diamond trading FAQ

How many diamonds make an emerald?
1 diamond at the best rate any villager offers, from the Armorer at the Journeyman tier. That slot runs 12 trades before it locks, so one villager takes 12 of them per restock.
Which villager sells Diamond?
None. Diamond is bought from you rather than sold to you, so trading is a way to turn it into emeralds and not a way to obtain it.
