ENCHANTED DIAMOND AXE

The axe is the one item on this whole site sold by two professions at once. A Toolsmith and a Weaponsmith both carry it, at expert and for the same 17 to 31 emeralds, because the axe has been a weapon as much as a tool since the switch to attack damage on tools years ago. Whichever smith you happen to level, the axe waits for you on both of their sheets.

That dual identity shows up in what it can roll. Efficiency, Silk Touch and Fortune come from the mining side of an axe, Sharpness, Smite and Bane of Arthropods from the fighting side, all drawn from one shared pool. No other piece on this site can land on both a mining enchantment and a combat one from the same roll.

It shows up finished either way, whichever smith sells it to you, with the enchantment already decided by the time it changes hands.

Both the Toolsmith and the Weaponsmith sell it from expert onward, at the same 17 to 31 emeralds either way. Nothing separates the two offers on price, so the only thing worth comparing is which villager you can actually get to that tier first.

Enchanted Diamond Axe sells for anywhere between 17 and 31 emeralds, from the Toolsmith at the Expert tier, and 9 of the other 11 cost less. That is a rolled price rather than a fixed one, so the Toolsmith you happen to find matters more than the tier does.

The Toolsmith at its expert tier asks 17 emeralds for an enchanted diamond axe, on its cheapest roll. 8 of the 72 villagers that pay emeralds, emptied out:

17 diamonds against 510 flint for the same 17 emeralds, 30 times the carrying, and the shortest wait is the Fisherman at 10.6 real minutes of shelf, gathering not counted.

A smithing table claims the Toolsmith job, a grindstone claims the Weaponsmith, and either path reaches this trade at expert, with every tier below it cleared through real emerald trades first. Levelling one of each doubles your odds of finding the axe without doubling the work, since the two ladders climb independently.

Whichever villager you buy from, his roll is fixed the moment he last restocked, not the moment you pay. Breaking his workstation before that first purchase reshuffles it; doing so after locks in whatever he already handed you, for good. How re-rolling works.

Buying it pays 15 experience toward the tier above, and 7 uses of just this offer would clear that gap on their own.

3 axes clear a slot at either seller, and the wait for a refill is 2 real minutes at the workstation. A Minecraft day runs 20 real minutes and fits exactly two of those refills, so two full slots is the ceiling per villager, same rule for a Toolsmith or a Weaponsmith.

Run one villager for a full day and the bill lands between 102 and 186 emeralds for 6 axes. Run a Toolsmith and a Weaponsmith on the same day and that doubles, which is the real advantage of having both jobs levelled at once rather than waiting on a single villager to restock.

Either seller pays an emerald for a single diamond, so spare diamonds fund the purchase directly no matter which of the two you are buying from.

If you are levelling a Toolsmith rather than a Weaponsmith, the rest of his sheet is worth a look on the same trip: he also sells enchanted diamond shovel, enchanted diamond pickaxe, coal, stone axe, stone shovel and stone pickaxe.

A diamond axe with Efficiency clears wood faster than anything else in the game, and it hits harder than a diamond sword. That combination makes it the tool a builder carries and a fighter borrows.

It is also the priciest thing on the Toolsmith's sheet in most rolls, so the question is whether the enchantment is one you wanted. Unbreaking and Efficiency are worth the emeralds; Fortune on an axe does nothing useful, since wood does not roll for drops.

Right clicking a log with any axe strips the bark off it, which is a whole second set of wood blocks with no crafting step, and the same click waxes copper back to bare metal and scrapes an oxidised block one stage cleaner.

In a fight the axe disables a shield for several seconds, which is the single most useful thing it does that a sword cannot. Against a player or a pillager holding one, that is the whole engagement.

Efficiency is what makes the difference to the wood, and Silk Touch on an axe does nothing at all, so a roll that lands there is worth rerolling rather than buying.
