Milk Bucket in Minecraft trading
Milk is the undo button. Drink it and every status effect on you goes away at once, which makes a bucket of it the answer to poison in a cave, the wither from a skeleton, and the nausea that follows a bad decision involving rotten flesh. The Wandering Trader will give you 2 emeralds for that, one of 6 items he takes off players rather than sells to them, and no job villager anywhere trades it.
Behind the trade sits a cow, and cows are the least demanding animal in the game. Two of them and a handful of wheat becomes a pen that never stops producing, and the milking itself costs nothing but a click. What it costs instead is the bucket, which stays with the trader when the trade goes through. He is not buying the milk so much as buying your iron with a bit of dairy attached. No recipe in Java 26.2 produces it. Outside trading the jar names it in 1 chest table and nowhere else.
Here is the argument for keeping some anyway. Milk strips the good effects along with the bad, so it is also the fastest way to shed invisibility you no longer want or a regeneration you were relying on. That double edge is why experienced players carry one and leave the rest of the pen unmilked. Selling the entire supply to a man who will be gone in an hour is a trade you can regret at exactly the wrong moment.

The 1 trade on this item was read out of the trade files Minecraft Java 26.3 ships in its own data, checked on against the item, both amounts and the use limit. Bedrock 1.26.50.4 is read as well, and where it disagrees the row says how. Which files, and what is not checked.
Odds, groups and price rules for Milk Bucket
| Trade | Java odds | Bedrock odds | Bedrock group | Price multiplier | One cure takes off |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 33% | 33% | 1 | no discounts | does not apply |
The wandering trader is not a villager: he keeps no reputation, so curing one and winning a raid both leave his prices exactly where they are. His trade files carry a price multiplier all the same, and nothing in the game reads it.
Your odds of finding Milk Bucket
Every trader who spawns picks 2 lines out of the 6 on his shopping list, which puts milk on 33% of them and works out at roughly 3 traders before you meet one who wants it. Finding the offer is the easy half. The hard limit is underneath it: 2 trades, then nothing, because he has no barrel to walk back to and no restock in his behaviour at all. 4 emeralds is the entire lifetime value of one trader to a dairy farmer.
| Villager | Tier | Villagers with this offer | Rolls to see it | Most from one villager | After a cure |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wandering Trader | buying pool | 33% (2 in 6)same in Bedrock | about 3 | 4 emeralds in total2 uses, he never restocks | cannot be cured |
The chance is the draw size over the pool size in the game's own trade set file for that tier. The Bedrock line under it is the same sum on Bedrock's own table, which splits a tier into groups and draws out of each one separately, so the two editions often disagree. The wandering trader has no workstation and never restocks, so his row is everything that offer will ever give you, and he has no reputation to earn, so curing does nothing for him. Counted from the game's own draw sizes. How that check works.
Who trades Milk Bucket, and at what price
The price is 2 emeralds a bucket and it never moves. Profession trades roll a range per villager and this one does not, so there is nothing to re-roll and no better trader to hunt for. The slot allows 2 trades, which puts 4 emeralds on the table and closes the subject.
On his own list it sits near the top. 1 of the other 5 pays more per item, and 1 pays exactly the same, so if a trader draws that pair you can empty both slots without choosing. A trader shows 2 buying lines at a time, and which two you get is decided when he spawns.
Search the village side and you find nothing. Not the Butcher, who deals in meat and takes no interest in what the cow produces while alive, and not the Farmer, whose whole table is crops. Milk has exactly one buyer in Minecraft and he does not live anywhere.
How to actually get Milk Bucket from the trader
Nothing about this trade behaves like a village. The Wandering Trader arrives near you on his own schedule with two llamas in tow, sells and buys for a while, and then despawns whether or not you got what you wanted. There is no workstation to place, so the trick of breaking a job block to shuffle the offers does not apply, and there is no tier ladder to climb because he has no tiers.
The practical work is on your side of the counter. Keep filled buckets ready, since a cow is not always where the trader parks, and milk cannot be topped up from a stack the way arrows can: one bucket is one trade. He draws 2 of his 6 buying lines, so plenty of traders will want water or crops and have no interest in your dairy at all.
When he does want it, the whole exchange is over in 2 clicks. The offer then locks and stays locked. Keeping him alive with a name tag is still worth doing, because his selling side has plants and blocks you cannot get anywhere else, but it will not bring the milk line back. If you want more milk money, you want more traders.
One detail that costs people a walk home: milk buckets do not stack. Filling the offer means one bucket per trade, so a full run wants 2 separate inventory slots before you count whatever else you brought along to sell. Mooshrooms milk exactly like cows if your world happened to drop a mushroom island nearby.
Tips for trading Milk Bucket
Build the pen before you need it. A fenced square with a pair of cows in it feeds this trade forever, and the wheat you breed them with is the same wheat a Farmer buys, so the field pays twice.
Keep one bucket back. 2 emeralds is a fair price and it is not worth being the player who sold the last milk in the base an hour before walking into a cave spider spawner.
Do the sums on the iron. The trader keeps the container, so the real question is whether you can spare buckets at 4 emeralds for a full slot. With an iron farm the answer is always yes and this is free money. Without one it is a bad habit.
The other things he will take: water bottle, water bucket, fermented spider eye, baked potato, hay bale. His full stock, both directions, is listed on the Wandering Trader page.
The cure for everything, and the ruin of a potion
Drinking milk clears every effect on you at once. Poison, wither, nausea, all of it gone, which makes a bucket of it the standard thing to carry into a swamp hut or a cave full of cave spiders.
It clears the good ones too, which is the catch. Drink milk after a strength potion and you have thrown the potion away, so the bucket is an emergency item rather than something to sip.
The bucket comes back empty, and a cow refills it as often as you like, so the only real cost is the iron in the bucket. Three of them are also what a cake is made of.
