BRAIN CORAL BLOCK

Real brain coral gets its name from a folded, mottled surface, but flatten that onto a single cube and most of what made it distinctive disappears: a placed brain coral block mostly just reads as a soft pink-lilac square, closer to the other pastels in the game than to anything you would call reef texture. That is not a complaint. It is what makes this one of the five coral colours worth buying in bulk rather than one at a time. The Wandering Trader sells the live block for 3 emeralds.

There is no recipe for it anywhere in the game's own files, and mining a live one without Silk Touch gets you nothing back, so the trader is the only route that skips diving into a warm reef altogether.

Because the colour is soft rather than sharp, brain coral works as a base layer under sharper accents, a whole wall of it rather than a single highlighted block. It still needs water touching it to stay that colour: pulled onto dry land it fades to the same pale grey every coral block turns without a source nearby.

One trader, one price. The Wandering Trader asks 3 emeralds for a single brain coral block and offers it 8 times before that slot is spent for good, with no restock coming afterward. No profession villager touches it, buying or selling, at any tier in either edition.

The price is fixed rather than rolled, so it does not matter which trader you find one on: it always costs 3 emeralds, and it never comes back the other way for emeralds.

He asks 3 emeralds each, and 52 of the other 75 come cheaper. Price is the easy part: he draws his stock from a shared pool, so catching one that happens to be carrying brain coral block is the real constraint.

The Wandering Trader asks 3 emeralds for a brain coral block. 8 of the 72 villagers that pay emeralds, emptied out:

3 dark oak boats against 90 flint for the same 3 emeralds, 30 times the carrying, and the shortest wait is the Butcher at 1.9 real minutes of shelf, gathering not counted.

The Wandering Trader is not part of a village and answers to no workstation. He appears near wherever you are playing, two llamas leashed behind him, and disappears again forty minutes to an hour later whether or not brain coral block ever came up. What he is carrying was decided the second he spawned, so there is no trick to steer him toward it.

Selling it back to him does not work. He buys only 6 kinds of item, none of them coral, so brain coral block only ever moves from his inventory to yours. His full offer list is only a slice of everything he could carry, which means the trader currently in front of you may not have this row at all, and unlike a villager there is no reroll waiting for you: what he spawned with is what he keeps until he leaves.

If you do find him carrying it and want more than 8 blocks' worth, name him before he wanders off. A named mob will not despawn, so the trader becomes a fixed shop you can revisit, still holding the same offer at the same price.

Use it as a fill colour, not a feature. Because a placed block loses most of brain coral's real-world texture, it reads better as a wall or a floor of soft pink-lilac than as the one block you point a build at. That makes buying the full 8-use slot for 24 emeralds more defensible here than it would be for the brighter colours on his list.

Whatever you build with it still has to sit in water. A dry brain coral block bleaches within moments, same as every other colour, so plan the pool or the aquarium glass before you spend the emeralds.

Also on the wandering trader's list: bubble coral block, fire coral block, horn coral block, tube coral block, pale hanging moss and sulfur spike.

Coral is alive, and the game means it. Take a brain coral block out of water, or break the water around one you have placed, and within seconds it turns grey and becomes dead brain coral, a change nothing reverses. The pink is the whole reason to own it, so this is the rare decorative block where placement is a one-way decision.

Mining it needs Silk Touch as well. Without it the block dies on the way to your inventory and you carry home the grey version, which is why a live one is worth trading for at all.

Placed against a waterlogged block or inside a water source it stays alive indefinitely, so the usual trick is to build the wall wet and let the glass do the rest.
